We are residents of Washington state, uniting to defend our democracy, our civil and human rights, and our planet.
"Indivisible" is a national movement, and Walla Walla Indivisible is a framework of researching, networking, and action that follows the Indivisible Guide. As written in the guide, "We believe that protecting our values, our neighbors, and ourselves will require mounting a resistance to the Trump agenda — a resistance built on the values of inclusion, tolerance, and fairness."
Our resistance will reflect and center the voices of those most threatened by the incoming administration: immigrants, Muslims, people of color, LGBTQI people, the poor and working class, women, and our environment.
The Trump agenda does not reflect the American values of freedom, liberty, justice, and equality. We will refuse to normalize the racism, sexism, xenophobia, and bigotry that he and his administration are pushing forward.
Our objective is to reconceptualize what it means to be a participant in our democracy, incorporating sustainable and long-term engagement with our members of Congress (MoC) into our daily or weekly routines to pressure them into rejecting the Trump agenda. We are structuring our actions methodically, to prevent burnout. We may be anxious and angry, but to be effective in the long run we must pace ourselves, focus our energy on strategies with proven impact, and remember to take care of ourselves, too. We will "play defense," watch-dogging and pushing back against unjust policy or posturing, by engaging our MoC in three main ways:
- coordinating phone calls
- visiting district offices in person
- attending and/or organizing public events to either dialogue or protest
We will also support local efforts to promote safety, solidarity, equality, and democracy within our own home community. If you have a local event to share, please let us know here.
Our predominately defensive strategy does not mean we drop our own policy priorities or fall silent on expressing an alternate vision for our country, but it does mean that we utilize the leverage of influencing our MoC's legislative priorities to greatest extent we can.
